After the massive success of the Nightwalker EP, Harvey McKay returns to Soma with his latest release, Shift.

Harvey firmly cements his trademark sound in this release with two original tracks and a crafty remix of the title track by Rich Jones.

The back bone of Shift is made up of a driving kick and sub-bass combo. This is present throughout the track as the subtle samples and minimalistic and old-skool sounding synths build around it. The bassline grows deeper as the track progresses through the gears, with enough growl to rumble the guts of any seasoned clubber.

The Rich Jones remix works on a thoroughly grooving beat, with hefty bass and shuffling percussive rhythms working in tandem. There is a slightly acidic squelch in Rich’s remix – filtering up slowly and encouraging tension. This remix covers both the menacing and the playful in equal measures.

After Hours adopts a more melodic approach. Some quality chords played on the synths gives this track its soul while the beats and percussion allow it to hold its own on the dance-floor.

Reset Robot is a man about town in current techno trends, with releases on the like of Dubfire’s enigmatic Sci&Tec imprint, Fergie’s Excentric Records, 100% Pure and 8-sided Dice and co-producers ranging from Christian Smith to Alan Fitzpatrick. His beautifully produced sound oozes natural rhythms and textures, while keeping it strictly groove orientated. SOMA welcome Reset Robot on his debut release with the label!

Up first, La Porte plays on sliced & spliced vocals and a huge synth part that bounds in and out, keeping the groove moving. Tight and terse percussion layer one on top of another adding depth in the mix, while the vocal cuts filter up and down letting everything swing. The beauty of this track lies in the groove sitting steady and allowing the swells to develop organically. As the changes are subtle and timely, the track flows in a manner great tech-house ought to. With festival season soon approaching – La Porte is an essential for causing it on the floor.

On the flip, Se Deplacer is built on the same foundations, but opts for a slightly chunkier, but straighter rhythm that is created from heavy-set percussion and a fat bass-line. There are playful undertones in Se Deplacer, as it toys with an up-beat and looping vocal, but don’t be fooled – this ain’t child’s play!

With this weekend's Ibiza season opening and Sonar festival on the horizon, the Scottish duo are ready to drop the second instalment of the fantastic, 'The Sound of Glasgow' that celebrates the city's production talent.

Inspired by the early 80's Glaswegian indie label 'Postcard' and their 'Sound of Young Glasgow' ethos, Silicone Soul through the series, celebrate the rich electronic heritage of their city. The first featured the talents of Gary Beck and Sei A. Today though it's the turn of the label heads themselves and exciting new talent Simon Stokes who rather than tell us tales of the dark Glasgow winters, take us to the balmy Andalusian dusk and fiesta time on a Brazilian Bahia!

Silicone Soul's 'Time Mariner's Mirrour' may be a mouthful, but boy is it one delectable dish. Named after an ancient chart that allowed the navigation of time, the track holds an air of mystery and suspense. The Flamenco guitar line is woven exquisitely between the effortless waves of its beats, creating a wonderfully fluid, yet tough groove throughout. This is made for big systems and dark rooms.

In stark contrast to the moodiness of the A-Side, Simon Stokes provides a cheeky little number that is ready to rule those sunshine terraces for the coming months. Sitting here with the sun coming in, checking out who is on which day at rockness's 3 day weekend next week, as the tangible excitement builds around me! It seems like almost everyone I know in scotland is going this year.

As it approaches there are lots of things for us at soma to sort out even though we only play a small-ish part in the mammoth overall proceedings- with our Saturday stint at the new afterburner stage- we have 6 artists- gary beck, silicone soul, fergie, chris lamb (animal farm), edit select and our headliner green velvet. The minute I saw what the afterburner on youtube from glasto I thought of green velvet - I think you will all get it when you see the flames and theatrics as he closes the stage between midnight and 2am on the Saturday night! A lot of folk I know who went to bestival last year had told me about it and its great Jim King the rockness head honcho has brought it to Scotland.

From the soma side of things there was some good news this week- Gary Beck is being recorded by radio one for his first essential mix and its so well

deserved- as well as soma he is recording for some great labels like minus and saved. Also we have the new silicone soul cd out soon - a great mixed compilation of their amazing darkroom dubs label which is shining bright at the moment. Silicone soul are huge in the north of scotland- although hailing from glasgow they first dj-ed in inverness at some wild parties in the countryside and the jungle palace club- its where they cut their teeth and the support is still strong.

Edit-select is the new project from long time soma collaborator percy x - he is big with richie hawtin and luciano so you get the picture - he is gonna play earlier in the evening with his more minimal sound. Fergie is a great dj too - he turned his back on the hard house scene and the money that went with it a few years back to follow his passion in techno music - starting from scratch and building a great new vibe up - both with his releases and his gigs. He has come along way and last year remixed slam's positive education and played our Pressure night. Kicking off the day for us is animal farm's chris lamb who is a veteran glasgow jock- he is gonna do a great warm-up and we have now also decided that he will kick things off earlier at 430pm in the late afternoon sun with a set starting with a selection of cuts from our chilled out soma coma series which we have just prepared the relase of volume 4 - its a perfect way to start and its the other side of soma- from ambient and beatless to emotive building

Of course there are plenty of other things I want to check out - its a great weekend. I can't get up there on Friday as we have cajmere (green velvet's alter ego) playing house music with slam at the sub club in glasgow but the ones to watch in my opinion are crystal castles on the mainstage) playing before the mighty fat boy slim who played the inaugural rockness and some old mates of ours, booka shade in the clash arena and of course the sub club crew at the afterburner.

Arriving on Saturday I will be spending most time at our stage of course but given the chance I will be checking out leftfield's anticipated return on the mainstage and of course aphex twin who is probably on at the same time.

Sunday is more of a day off so I can get around the whole place- blondie are a favourite from my youth and I bought the first strokes album as soon as it came out - they look like the younger blondie band members so I knew I would love them. Of course I must hang out with my namesake dave clarke the dj too. Vitalic live is going to blow everyone away and then derrick may closing the afterburner is a must for anyone with even a passing interest in dance music - the originator and innovator! I think Sunday circus residents are also going to be a last minute addition which will be great as I love those guys and their music. Rockness and roll!

SLAM TENT SPINS INTO A NEW DECADE OF DANCE:

With the first T in the Park of the decade drawing near, the complete Slam Tent line-up can now be revealed for 2010 with an outstanding bill of names from techno titans to hip-hop heroes. This tent has it all under one famous big blue roof. With the T in the Park line-up already hailed as ‘flawless’, the Slam Tent (an institution in its own right) has been scrupulously curated to provide the essential festival dance music experience with Carl Cox and Richie Hawtin presents Plastikman headlining this year.

Dance veteran Carl Cox returns still reigning supreme at the top of his game after a 10 year hiatus from the Scottish fields of Balado. After bringing the first Slam Tent of the millennium to a close, 10 years on he’s back to entertain the masses. A musical maestro since he was a tot, a DJ since he was a mere 15, Carl Cox emits a love of his work that is dangerously infectious. You name it, Carl's been there and done it covering every inch of techno turf possible showing no sign of slowing down pace with the release of his much-anticipated artist album, ‘All Roads Lead To The Dancefloor,’ out later this year. It seems only right that he should play the first Slam Tent of the decade as the headliner on Saturday 10th July.

The alter ego of one of the world’s most revered electronic DJs and producers Richie Hawtin presents Plastikman (Live) at T in the Park as part of the first ever global Plastikman tour. Dedicated Plastikfans will be blown away in 2010 as Hawtin's musical history and technological experimentations come together to allow Plastikman to once again reconfigure the futuristic musical landscape. His latest experiment, SYNK is a free app moving social networking and crowd sourcing on to a whole new level. Developed as part of the Plastikman project it allows fans to control elements of what happens on stage during a show. The roles can switch at any given time adding an electrifying element of surprise to him and the crowd. Plastikman (Live) will bring Sunday night to a spinning close.

The nimble flows and stunning beats of the final names to be announced for this year’s Slam Tent are Andrew Weatherall & Ivan Smagghe, Pan-Pot, Harvey McKay (Live) and Gary Beck.

“In ’79, when I first heard Music For Airports by Brian Eno, I remember reading a great article about it and it sounded so fantastic conceptually.

“I remember listening to it and being incredibly disappointed. Because of my punk background spent living and working up north I don’t think there were much realism in there. I understood that he were pitching it at a utopian vision, but for us it just seemed so out of place, like something from a sci-fi film.”

Slam's monthly residency, Return To Mono at the world-famous Sub Club in Glasgow, has become a staple of the ever-advancing music scene in the West of Scotland. Guests like Ivan Smagghe, Adam Beyer, Alex Under, Claude VonStroke, Dusty Kid, Paul Ritch & Marc Houle have brought some delights to the club - but the one thing that has cemented Return To Mono in Glasgow's clubbing history has been the quality and consistency of Slam's warm-up sets. The Black Dog - Music For Real Airports out now!

Airports have some of the glossiest surfaces in modern culture, but the fear underneath remains. Hence this record is not a utilitarian accompaniment to airports, in the sense of reinforcing the false utopia and fake idealism of air travel. Unlike Eno's Music for Airports, this is not a record to be used by airport authorities to lull their customers.

The album is a bittersweet, enveloping and enormously engaging listen. It is ambient, but focused. This is not sonic mush, nor adolescent noise. Nor is it a dance album. Much of the raw material of the album was made in airports over the last three years. While on tour, the Black Dog made 200 hours of field recordings, much of which was processed and combined with new music in the airport itself, waiting for the next flight. This vast amount of content has been slowly distilled into a set of particularly evocative pieces of music.

Composed in large degree of drones there is little in the way of beats until half way through - but rhythm is plentiful within the buzzing synthetic warmth. This record is not necessarily a comfortable listen. But it captures the spectrum of emotions stirred by airports. There is tension and disappointment. But there is also romance and excitement. All this on this record.

We at Soma are proud to present this modern day musical journey, this is one of those albums that you really need to listen to from start to finish in order to "get it", which is something thats increasingly rare in modern music. We hope you enjoy this as much as we do.

We've got two amazing tracks for you to check out this time, if you haven't heard them before you're in for a treat! The Pan-Pot lads have definitely excelled as the first guests for Paragraph!

First up is the 'Rave Tool', which sees them unleash a large dose of their typical grit and aggression. True to form, their rumbling sub-bass and stripped percussion warm the flow, letting an off-beat and almost wonky synth pattern work its weight... With an early break-down disrobing and deconstructing the elements, emphasis is on the rhythm, allowing feedback effects to create the subdued tension.

Pan-Pot's 'Bass Tool' sees them work the bass-bins again. With more energy, flare and jack, the Bass Tool steps things up, gathering swing and drive through their intuitive use of delays and reverbs. Sharp synths bring the hysteria of the original Room 2 to the forefront of the mix, to cause the real damage. All in all, Pan-Pot cut their production back to their barest and most effective essentials letting the music do the work.

The ever powerful combination of Funk DVoid and Sian deal out another dose of dance-floor on their latest EP, A Wasp in a Wig. Following on from the success of both the Ginebra and the A Raven Wheeling Overhead EPs this cements their place as heavyweight talents on Soma.

The strikingly titled A Wasp in a Wig grabs the attention with sub-heavy, rumbling bass and wobbly synths, pierced by a very much wasp-like buzz. That buzz sends the track into a spiral before everything kicks back in with the track climaxing in a whirl of dark sound.

2009 was a great year for Slam. Their UK residences at London's Fabric, Glasgow's Pressure and Sub Club were as popular as ever, and the duo enjoyed incredible gigs at many of the worlds finest clubs, including Berghain, Womb, The Loft, Goa and Space.

One of the key highlights of the year was seeing their own Paragraph imprint go from strength to strength. June's 'One Note Samba' / 'Room 2' became an instant summer smash and as the winter months drew in the pair dropped the mighty 'Variance' / 'We Doin' This Again?'. With a roll call of big name support that reads like a 'Who's Who' of modern electronic music, Paragraph has rapidly laid the foundations for what is to be a very successful future.

Today we are treated to another Slam double header, and again two very different tracks. 'Heart Of The Soul' sees them taking a bass- heavy tech-house route. Lashings of groove and a forceful drive, make it a clever tool for the floor. On the flip we have 'Collecting Data'
which, whilst leading us into darker territory with its creepy melody, has a bassline that punches well above its weight in the funk category. Slam at their very best.

‘Turntable Technology’ is the highly anticipated exceptional double artist album from beat technician Pablo on Soma Records, stepping away from the staple label sound to unleash a synthesis of anarchic beats, soundscapes and medleys.

‘Turntable Technology’ is a diverse and mesmerizing album that defies all genre boundaries. Sounding like a reincarnation of The Avalanches crossed with De La Soul and The Cinematic Orchestra right through to Ennio Morricone and Jon Brion, Pablo fuses rare beats and breaks, hip-hop, soul and jazz together with soundtrack, classical, down-tempo to create an album unlike any you will have heard. Experimenting heavily with instrumentation, many of the parts are played by Pablo himself, including the Cuatro guitar, Puerto Rico’s national instrument.

Pablo is Michael Hunter, the Glaswegian musical talent that brought the dubbed-out goodness of Butches Brew to Soma’s sister label, Fenetik, under his Butch Cassidy Sound System alias. He has produced under his Pablo guise on Good Looking Records, Fenetik Music and Red Hook Recordings and composed the theme and incidental music for the computer game Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas & Grand Theft Auto IV; music that has been heard by millions of gamers, all over the world.

The album commences with title track, ‘Turntable Technology’, a vocal introduction to turntable use and control set over a choice selection of glitched-out and skipping beats. Swinging into the primate sounds of ‘Sing’, with its truly infectious riff and freaky vocals charging up the energy before stepping into the dancefloor friendly ‘Fairchild: Live At The Lab’ and tripped out ‘Sky Is High’.

‘Turn The Page’ is a brief insight into the life of Pablo, discussing his one-room home and lack of sufficient footwear all through an audio-book format while ‘The Story Of Sampling’ delves into his topsy-turvey world with classical strings and lyricists stitched together with a ghetto’s worth of attitude.
Featured on Rough Trade’s end of year compilation, Counter Culture ’08, ‘Record Shop’ is filled with vintage goodness. It teaches a lesson on what Pablo spends his buttons on before shooting straight into the cosmic ‘Goes To Pluto’, with its funk’d-up bass, spiralling synths and whacked-out shakers and cow-bells.

‘Music Maestro’ mellows the tone with harps and gentle singing in anticipation for the dark and mysterious ‘Rooftop Chase’, crawling with eerie sounds that shoot cautious looks over your shoulder. Finishing CD1 is the divine, saxophone-led ‘High Jazz’, a blissful and sincere record that tugs happily at the heartstrings.

CD2 is a collection of instrumentals of many of the originals scattered amid additional original works including ‘The Cuatro Track’, a beautifully peaceful and sanguine guitar solo and ‘Into The Deep Blue‘, a deeply passionate record provoking imagery of rolling Italian hills, olive trees and Mafioso. ‘Proceed With Caution’, ‘On The Trail’ and ‘Act of Persuasion’ share a menacing spirit with the earlier ‘Rooftop Chase’ while still blazing with magnetic mystery.

‘Journey’s End’ begins to wind the album down with melancholy and almost helpless sentiment before the dreamy and soulful ‘Reincarnation’ leaves the sweet taste of Pablo watering in your mouth.
From beginning to end this album moves, entertains and scares. As much at home within the world of cinema as it is for anytime listening, Pablo has concocted an utterly memorable masterpiece that lives and breathes.

Slam bring back the jack with their superb new release on their Paragraph imprint, Variance/ We Doin’ This Again?

With recently released remixes for Paul Ritch, Mihalis Safras and Samuel L Session, a big Slam single on Len Faki's Figure label, and a much anticipated Slam mix of Josh Wink's "Everybody to the Sun" about to drop, the duo are on a roll.

When the first Paragraph record landed almost a year ago, it instantly grabbed the attention of the Techno fraternity and marked a new sound for Slam, concentrating on a rawer and more groove orientated style.

Paragraph 004 doesn’t stray from this ethos.

Variance leads on the EP with a relentless groove and sub-bass subtleties that suck you in from the off-set. Sonically charged melodic sounds create a dizzying LFO driven effect, while a sparingly used vocal sample adds to the organic texture of track, letting it breathe after the startling crescendo.

We Doin’ This Again? returns to our House, giving a nod to the Slam’s previous Freelance Science label and pseudonym. Stabbing vocals and tripped out percussion give this track undeniable swing, with a restrained sub-bass adding extra bump. We Doin’ This Again? lends its self to their Return To Mono residency at Glasgow’s Sub Club, where Chicago influenced House flourishes.

The year's coming to a close now and we here at Soma are only just catching up with this social networking malarkey, and now that we've finally gotten ourselves a Blogger account we're going to exploit it to the max. Well, truth be told we'll probably have a great time sitting here updating it for all of about 2 days then we'll forget about it. But, in the off-chance that our short attention spans don't delude us and we remember to come on here at fairly regular intervals and update you with what's happening with the label, you should check back for updates every now and then.

So a lot has happened for the label throughout this year and November was a good month for everything being summed up. First of all we released the annual Soma Compilation CD which rounds up the best of this year's releases from Soma. With remixes from Robert Hood, Adam Beyer, Orlando Voorn, Onionz and Mark Broom and plenty of new original work to salivate over it's worth checking out. You can grab a copy of it here.

The Black Dog were last week awarded album of the year from DJ Mag with their outstanding Radio Scarecrow album. 2008 has been a huge year for the guys on Soma with the release of the new album, some beasting remixes coming their way, gigs all over the world including one of the best sets Sonar festival has ever seen, and various side projects that the act take part in. A huge congratulations must go out to the act. If you've not heard Radio Scarecrow yet check it out at the Soma shop.

Also in other shop news, we've currently got a massive Christmas sale on all our back catalogue mp3 downloads so scoot on over there for any classics that you've not got your mitts on yet.

A couple of new things to look forward to in the Soma calendar - two, that's right TWO, new offshoot record labels. First of all Slam have just launched Paragraph, a new experimental label specifically for Slam releases. The first release City Destroyer is out now and doing some serious damage. This will be followed at the start of '09 by Hot Knives, which more than lives up to its title. The second new label is Somabeta, a new sublabel of Soma's tailored specifically for new and emerging talent that's currently floating our boat. The first 12" will be out in January and will be a split 12" between Audiofillia and Jean Ramesse & Let's Go Outside. Shortly afterwards there'll be a Somabeta compilation album comes out to let you sample exactly what the new label is going to be all about.
